When Life Gives You Lemons
How would you turn a negative situation into something positive?
I look at most of the negative situations that I have been in and try to understand what I can learn from each situation. I truly believe that sometimes we are put in situations to grow and that these situations will keep repeating themselves until we do grow. For example, I don't invite disrespect, so when people think that they can disrespect me; I have had to learn not to react in an unfavorable way. I am still growing and I pry myself on being transparent. I am human and I make mistakes. I hurt. I don't always have it together as some might think.
What and/or Who inspired you to follow your dream?
There are many people that have and continue to inspire me every day to follow my dreams. Some of which at times seem very outlandish until I pull it off. Those that inspire me is my late grandmother; my late boyfriend (the father of my children), my mother, my children, my best friend and business BFF, and many of the clients that I have worked with over the years. I must give credit to them because many of them had literally nothing and would come into my office every day with a smile and things like oatmeal, aloe juice, and candy for me because they knew I liked it.
Keeping Up With the Bosses
Tell us about Your Business
Nhakia started her business after working in social services in different capacities for over 10 years; and in the HIV and AIDS field for over 6 years in various roles. Nhakia began to realize that many of her clients were concerned about sex and sexuality issues after their diagnosis and/or treatment of various STIs and STDs, including HIV and AIDS, but were not getting answers to their questions or were meant with resistance from social workers and case managers that were uncomfortable discussing sex and sexuality. Nhakia decided to begin to discuss basic sex and sexuality concerns with her clients and their lack of knowledge about sex and sexuality. Nhakia began to see a change in her clients and began to understand that if we were to bring down the rates of STIs, HIV/AIDS in people and increase pleasure based messaging, especially for people of color that we had to begin to have honest conversations about sex and sexuality. Nhakia realized that was not going to be easy- as sex is still a taboo subject. But true to Nhakia’s out of the box thinking, she decided to continue to grow this concept and started Prevention Is Key Consulting, LLC (PIKC) on Mother’s Day in 2017. To make a statement, PIKC took it a step further and combined her love of fashion and sexual health to create “Prevention Meets Fashion”. Prevention Meets Fashion is an initiative under Prevention Is Key Consulting, LLC that was created to raise funds and “Increase SEXual Health knowledge through Fashion”. Nhakia enjoys talking about sex in a raw, bold, and honest way.

What's your definition of Women Empowerment?
My definition of Women Empowerment is that empowerment is a process and women empowerment expands beyond education, political, cultural, religious, and economic issues. It is about the individual as well because you can gain all the traits and not feel empowered.
